It's been or just about has been ten years since Adam Oelsner, Lisa Schonberg and Jacob Wilson started playing music together and calling it Kickball. Self-Titled CD in 2002 came out on their Houseopolis label just like Huckleberry Eater in 2004. ABCDEFGHIJKickball in 2006. Everything is a Miracle Nothing Is a Miracle Everything Is in 2007.

To celebrate we're putting together a bunch of pictures and videos and old live shows (speed limit 35 house or olympia world news anyone?) and more including all the old records up on the web. A collection of 10 years of Kickball just seemed proper.

Local personal favorites of mine, and witch haus nodders, Grave Babies follow members of Wet Paint DMM and Eel Eater's new band Half Gift for their (public) debut.

We're excited to announce USF's new 'Jamaica Plain" 12" EP is available for pre-sale. You can stream to entire thing below and pick up a copy of the limited edition vinyl 12" vinyl. Hand screened on recycled covers, at Cairo in Seattle, WA and limited to 300 copies. Art designed by Devon Varmega, known for his work for Best Coast, The Ruby Suns, Animal Collective, and more.

U.S.F. are returning to fantastical sonic realms and giddy, youthful exploration with Jamaica Plain. The ten-minute title track is the longest USF song to date -- a sweeping epic by most bands' standards, and an ideal opportunity for the band to indulge in a variety of styles, including the richly-detailed, aqueous chillwave sounds they've become known for. Incorporating everything from dubstep rhythms to heavy metal guitar, the Jamaica Plain EP is an ambitious sonic statement from this young band, and only the second time they've ever been pressed to vinyl.

Next week you have to look forward to an official announcement of a really exciting new EP from Seattle's USF who currently have a pair of non-H+H tracks up for you to stream and are asking for donations to help replace gear that was stolen a few months ago, which they are still struggling with.

In collaboration with the artists and CMRTYZ a new Christmas full length will be out before SXSW rolls around this spring. We've still got a handful of copies of their Metal 7" featuring Pies b/w El Colorado available in our store.

In regard to the archives, we're proud to be partnering with some PNW friends to make Kickball's discography available online including some never heard before material and live sets.

I hardly know anything about these wild kids from Olympia, WA. All their records are downloadable for free on their website. They remind me of R. Stevie Moore's hippy dippy pop style but this video single for the song "Alone" sounds like loser single era Beck.

Playing their last show till spring to a house crowded to the brim with energetic kids, a sky pouring rain and the basement walls sweating in grief, showing Christmas how much they will be missed.

Arrington De Dionyso's Malaikat Dan Singa supported, Boca a Boca played their last show as the last of the evening.

Look out for a 12" of the 11 songs recorded and engineered by Ben Hargett, Arrington De Dionyso and Christmas.

The Scenic Beauty 7" has been sold out but is still available online for download. The Metal 7" has arrived upon my arrival home from tour and is available online.

In support of his move he will tour the west coast beginning this Friday with local experimental rock group and neighbors Haunted Horses.

This weekend, and starting tonight, is Expo '87. A collection of great local, independent musicians playing in tiny spaces the size of your apartment, or living room.

Friday night will top off with the presentation of the Seattle Band Map (1/6 above), created by Rachel Ratner and Real Fake, or in full "The Cartographic Study of Musical Incest" In it's 60 square feet the band map covers the Intelligence, to Mudhoney, to Botch, to Fastbacks and on, only connecting bands with shared members. Attendees are encouraged to make corrections and additions to the map.

Saturday is loaded with Highfives' artists and friends. Including our new addition to the family, Wet Paint. ALASKAS, USF, Brainfruit just to begin. It's all happening at the corner of Summit and Mercer this weekend. Check the schedule below for times, pricing, and such. Read the Expo '87 blog.

In the wake of their death in the living room under my office, Braidstorm continue to eerily echo the halls of our home. Maybe its the drums that have sat their since that fateful day a month or two ago, or maybe somebody else is listening to ESG next door at full volume, no one can say for sure. Braidstorm will have a video for their #1 hit Grand Fur in the Backyard Games DVD compilation coming out this fall on Highfives and Handshakes. Most or all of the videos are by the illustrious R. Wolfe and will include music from Seahouse, Masters and Johnson, Abe Vigoda, Tinsel, Last Slice of Butter and more.

This video for the song Building Blocks which was available on their assumed to be sold out cassette tape appears to made from band hangout clips and use of the mozilla download helper which can pull streaming internet video onto your hard drive (brilliant! use it!). I think I might be guest push-upping in there somewhere, can't say for sure. See if you can pick out any old friends picking up the change and throwing it to there homies!

Highfives and Handshakes is proud to offer yet another evening of local auditory excellence. Featuring PPM (Abe Vigoda, Mika Miko) rockers Gun Outfit hailing from Olympia, WA. They're Dinosaur Jr. rock sound touched with bluesy deadpan alt-rock, drooled over recently by Seattle's Only Newspaper. Explode Into Colors, playing in Seattle for their second time only, are prepared to tear the house down with dubbed out ESG derived sound. Driving, creative rhythyms produced by Lisa Schonberg's (Kickball, The Strangers) intense drumming, supplemented by Heather Treadway's percussion and keyboard. Claudia Meza accepts baritone guitar duties growling and shreaking through layers of reverb and delay, laying heavy baritone lines.

Ocean Sunbirds from Universal Studios Florida

I'm pretty certain that anything dripping with gooey reverb these days will catch my loving ear. Given space in the chambers of echo and reverberation the tracks from Universal Studios Florida (USF) new release Ocean Sunbirds glow in the softly setting sun over the sea, boats rolling in the most distant plane burning up against vibrant blue-blocked orange and yellow clouds. The rhythym and keys, tripping and glitching in places, pointy synths run quick lines all the while a driving beat holds the swelling arpegiating drones in place.

This Seattle duo requires high volume or headphones and comes highly recomended for summer jamming purposes which, of course, leads this record to being H+H approved. Originally a bedroom project, the two were coaxed out of their homes and into my garage for their first show earlier this year. Receiving much local love, worldwide bloggage, and selling out of the first self titled EP from Little Fury Things shortly after that.

In this new track from USF's new album, Sun Glyphed Comanche Kissed, reminiscent of a slow motion flight over seas and jungles, you can hear the ocean slapping, gurlging, and surging underneath. Sparkling overtones and a light rhythym drops dropping close to the 2 minute mark, this is one of favorites from the record. Stream it out!

The new album, Ocean Sunbirds, is available on CD from Little Fury Things and on Cassette on Animal Image Search. Which just so happens to be an almost equally impossible name to search for as Universal Studios Florida, so enjoy this link.

I've oft heard critics or press people claiming artists to be "of the future" in what ever tense you have. Tin can garbage punk bands, garage chambered soundscapes echo devastation and nuclear apocalypse. These Are Power's cultish future is of colorful excess, there is no vast deserted plain or cities sunk into swamps. Conventional rock instruments synthed and triggered to make this futuresque party trio blind you with what they have brought back with them.

Since becoming mildly involved as a seasonal staffer at the Seattle International Film Festival three years ago, SIFF has never ceased to lure me back. The Festival, its wide range of attendees a, diverse assortment of local to international quirky film buffs; and surprising programming choices that oft bring unexpected delight. Among the delighted, LAs No Age who's been all over the fucking place this year after their 2008 release of Nouns on Sub Pop, will be performing original music to The Bear, a french film from 1989 with english subtitles. This is what SIFF has to say:

When a rockslide kills a mother bear, her cub Douce becomes an orphan in the threatening Canadian Rockies. Luckily, she encounters Bart, a full-grown male bear on the run from hunters after mauling their pack animals. Though the ill-tempered Bart initially rejects Douce’s companionship, the cub wins his affection by licking Bart’s gunshot wounds. Psychedelic mushroom trips and a rendezvous with Doc (the effeminate male bear who plays Bart’s love interest) are woodland fun at its finest, but the invasive fear of being hunted drives The Bear forward. Staged with trained bears and filmed in the Italian Dolomites, Jean-Jacques Annaud’s film seems like realism in drag as documentary.

This event is at the Triple Door in downtown Seattle, its 21+ and will run you a worthy $20. Happens on June 12th and there are two showings, at 7pm and 9:30pm.

Bad Ideas Poster Show

Tomorrow night local notorious poster designer Carlos Ruiz will unveil his xeroxed designer zine at Society Co.'s new space in Ballard. The content of the zine will be shown in their true to life color versions, as well as available in their lo-fi take home form. Hand destroyed Bad Ideas t-shirts and a compilation from local musicians featured in most of the posters being shown.

The show begins at 8PM and includes a live performance Charles Leo Gebhardt IV and is free, but bring a few dollars to pick up the original art and compilation. Society Co. showroom is located at 2221 NW 56th Suite 203, Seattle WA 98107.

Even if I didn't work for RainyDawg, this would be a show worthy of discussion. I saw Crystal Stilts and Wavves play back to back at SXSW and the kids went ape shit crazy! The flow of the two bands fuzzy sounds blend well and Idle Times and AFCGT will only add to the lo fi power house bill. Embrace your inner college.

The University of Washington's campus radio station Rainy Dawg Radio is celebrating its sixth birthday with a night of pop-infused underground noise. On Friday April 24th at 7pm Crystal Stilts, Wavves, and Idle Times will play a one-night-only show in the North Husky Den located in the HUB on the University of Washington Campus.

Crystal Stilts are an underground garage punk outfit hailing from New York City. Their debut self-titled EP has garnered praise from numerous review sites, including a Best New Music nod from Pitchfork Media. Their unique aesthetic has given them the buzz of being arguably the hottest band coming out of New York City today.

Wavvesis the relatively new lo-fi noise/punk project of Nathan Williams, a native of the San Diego. Touring with drummer Ryan Ulsh, Wavves delivers pop songs that are drowned in layers of noise and dissonance. A noise which has also warranted the Best New Music recommendation from Pitchfork.

Idle Times is the project of Brian Standeford, the Seattle native. Brian Standeford self-records all his songs, giving them a genuine touch of imperfection. Idle Times has been acquiring a good deal of press and quite a following. You can find Idle Times' most recent 7" on the notable record label Woodsist.

AFCGT is the baby of two Seattle underground bands: A-Frames and Climax Golden Twins. "AFCGT still throttle conventional rock niceties with white-knuckled intensity, sending the VU needle vibrating into the red like a stressed-to-the-max forehead vein" (Dave Segal, The Stranger).

Big surprise that I would go and break a couple fingers right as spring had sprung, just as my birthday had landed, right when my new drum set showed up and band practices were supposed to start, right when I'm short on cash and back from tour and I've got lots of typing to do.

I'm bummed this awesome poster is already dated, since Fuck You, Safari won't be able to make it up from Portland. Nevertheless, Brainfruit will be filling their place; consisting of Jon Carr from Bow+Arrow rocking the arpeggiated synths and bass while percussionist Garret Moore sits behind the kit. They're funky space age jams will move you and most likely rattle a few thing off shelves.

Seattle act Dimples has been Rip Band Winklin' all winter but returns with their pop adorabilty shining, and hopefully some new songs to learn the words to. If you havn't see them you've got some catching up to do.

CB and Robert Wolfe are sweating and bloodied with paper cuts from past week of relentlous manufacturing to bring Braidstorm's first Cassette (and first release ever) with songs recorded by Jim Schiel at the Schiel Dome. Casey Catherwood had a few things to saw about Dimples, Braidstorm and the release show in this week's Underage column in our local weekly rag, The Stranger.

Cairo has been putting on awesome weekends worth of shows once a month, they are always all ages. Check them out!

ALASKAS will be heading out on the road with 1985 this spring in the end of April through the beginning of May. They'll be hitting all the NW tour stops as far as Missoula, SLC, and Portland. If you have any interest booking contact either of the bands, dates are available on the ALASKAS myspace.

I saw Knot Knocked Up from Missoula, MT perform with ALASKAS, Physical Demon, White Leopards, Marriage, Italic Indian who was unable to play due to technical difficulties, at the Josephine last week. Knot Knocked Up performed with half of their band but still impressed their intensity on the crowd. A few people were naked. I can only hope to see them with their other two percussion/vocalists. This band was most primal, hilarious, strong, and potentially terrifying to fans of normality and pop sensibility. The whipping and dragging of chains against a table and shrill screams could give chills. I loved it.

Its been a wild week in Austin for 2009's South By Southwest, the TacocaT's pulled 4 shows under their belt over the sunny weekend. Half of the Taco Van-full have made it to New Orleans with The Pharmacy, and they'll be meeting up in New York finish dates with the Used Kids. Our van was toasted by the Arizona desert, and without help from our friends we might still be at my Aunt's house.

Forever has turned around and headed for Portland, they're playing in Oakland with Shannon and the Clams on the 25th of March and the at the Stud on the 26th in San Francisco, CA. They will be touring the US again for two months in June and July. Here's a new video of Forever performing a new song in LA.

Do you like ironic Southwestern visual nostalgia made by Northwestern artists with spirit animals? Us, too. It's all going down at the Dreamcatcher show at the Disjecta Gallery in Portland this Saturday, February 28. Doors open at 6, music starts at 7:30, and there's no cover charge. In addition to the impressive lineup of PDX-based bands set to play (including Cars and Trains, Rob Walmart, and White Fang), a sizable group of local acts are making the trek down to play. The list includes Hair Envelope, White Power Plant, Big Spider's Back and Universal Studios Florida, who has been performing alongside ALASKAS recently in between collaborating with artists across the US for their forth-coming full-length, set for release in the spring.

Universal Studio Florida is currently offering a track featuring Blind Man's Colour on their myspace. Below is the demo track, Frozen Bayou, from USF featuring ALASKAS.

Club Pop with TacocaT, Braidstorm, and Broken Nobles

Club Pop offer another killer bill for Thursday night. We've written about Braidstorm before, even put on a recent show of theirs. I can't express my excitement enough for Seattle's newest band They should be enough to make you get out to Chop Suey tomorrow night.

Broken Nobles is Conor Kiley of Holy Ghost Revival's new band. From the sound of their two songs posted on myspace, it might not live up to the 'tearing down the house' standards Holy Ghost lived up to; nonetheless, I only expect great things from Mr. Kiley.

TacocaT will be headlining, showcasing their pop punk anthems of volcanoes, drugs, and all those "vagina songs". They're a quality time tested and approved party band, and have yet to let any majority down, even Eric Grandy kinda changed his mind (I think).

H+H is happy to announce we'll be releasing TacocaT's tour EP on cassette+digital download for the US to gobble up while they're on tour in March and April. We're tagging along and video blogging the entire thing. Check out TacocaT's tour dates and sell them your van! They are adorable!

BRAIDSTORM, Seattle's newest band

Braidstorm refuses to be considered "cute". They play music because they like it, and if they keep it up like this no one is going to let them stop playing. They've got about 3 shows under their collective belts with several other coming up, including next Thursday's Club Pop with TacocaT.

Two drummers and a bass player intertwine in the song Grand Fur to create an upbeat, sing-alongers tongue twister. They just finished up recording songs with Jim Schiel and Christopher Brown who will be recording the next ALASKAS record beginning any day now. Those tracks aren't available yet, but we'll make sure to post some when they are. Currently there is a live track available at Braidstorm's myspace.

Hello friends, thanks for having hella fun on Saturday with me. I had a total blast. I wanted to let you know about a crucial show at my house, Chilladelphia, on Sunday. It features 2 incredibly excited young bands from Seattle: Herr Jazz and Problems. Also, from Portland we have the super-fun duo Total Bros making their Seattle debut. And, all the way from my hometown of Santa Rosa CA, comes Exasperation Missionary to beat your ass with some old-school screamo. The boys from Batman Vs. Predator, who shredded my house twice now, hold down bass and drums, so you know what you're getting into.

Oh, then on Friday the 13th, I am invading another living room in the U-District with my newest collaborator, comrades, and solid dudes who hook me up with rides to our shows: Universal Studios Florida. Check out their remix of my song Pronoun as well.

Clubhouse Gallery Opening

Last week, Highfives & Handshakes presented a free music and art showcase at the Clubhouse Gallery Opening in the central district. The night featured the newest artwork, zines, and merchandise from members of the Boss Level Art Collective along with live performances by Braidstorm, Universal Studios Florida, and ALASKAS.

The renowned Boss Level Collective is a group of talented local artists whose widely varying styles of painting and illustration have gathered much attention as of late. Among the list of members are Good Vibes, Derek Charm, Rondo, and Tika Masala, also one-third of the opening act Braidstorm. A Boss Level Showcase is being held at the Fuel Café on Capitol Hill (610 19th Ave E.) throughout the month of February.

The first band to go on was Braidstorm, made up of Jessica James, Becky Berryhill, and Tika Hall (www.myspace.com/braidstormy.) Their raw performance held a certain feminine quirkiness, wherein one could trace the influence of the Breeders. With a high-powered setlist of songs about endangered species, among other things, Braidstorm soon had the crowd jumping. If you liked what you heard, or haven't had the chance to check out this up-and-coming band of babes, they'll next be playing February 15 at the Rendezvous with Strong Killings and Cut***Loose.

Minutes later the tight space, by that time fully packed, was hijacked by Universal Studios Florida, who wove together a cosmic landscape of tribal beats, guitar loops, synthesizers, and who knows what else (www.myspace.com/universalstudiosfloridaband.) The duo, comprised of Rainydawg Radio's Jason Baxter and Kyle Hargus, recently put out a debut EP on Brooklyn-based Little Fury Things and has since been collaborating with ALASKAS, who appeared for a song at the end of their performance. Their mesmerizing self-titled release can be purchased online (www.littlefurythings.net) or at their next show with ALASKAS on February 13 (more information available on myspace.)

And finally, the one-man army known as ALASKAS took center for an energetic set, threatened midway by cops but stopping his aural assault for no one (www.dillonjamesregoisalaskas.com.) As always, Dillon James Rego demanded, and received, full crowd attention. In addition to nonstop touring, he recently put out a four-track CDR entitled "I Just Wanted To Give You Something Real To Hope For" and is preparing for the July 2009 release of "Set Yourself Free," a full-length album released through Highfives & Handshakes Records.

Art by Dane (Good Vibes!) Dane's work has been growing larger, in physical size, and more detailed over the past few months. His drawings come from a darker place, where creepy humanoids roam.

Art By Derek Charm! Derek's charm influence from classic styled comics is undeniable, but his fantasy scapes and portrayed action are signature to his paintings. He has an art show coming up at Verite/Cupcake Royale on 34th in Madrona (Seattle, WA).

ALASKAS, Universal Studios Florida, and Braidstorm will be providing music for the evening along with a DJ set by me.

We'll have art, records, zines, stickers, buttons, and clothes for sale!

New Talbot Tagora Video, Split With Bipolar Bear

There was a new video up for Talbot Tagora's song Internet Fixture on their myspace last time I checked it. The song is from their split 10" with LA band Bipolar Bear who share similar ethereal, trashy no wave roots, out on Ol' Factory Records at some point.

Another really great song caught in video by Talbot Tagora, theres pounding of the guitar, oceans full of vocals, and a great Britney Spears cameo. I heard someone say once that if you list your video with Britney Spears or whomever famous person you chose, as some of the keywords and have their cameo as the screen shot for the video you can significantly boost your hits. Someone should consider this.

Devon Williams comes to Vera

Tomorow, on January 20th. Pay day, inauguration day, and the day Devon Williams comes to the Vera Project. I've been looking forward to seeing him for quite some time, listening to Gene Pitney, Adam Green, and Death Vessel to get me ready for his honest, string flurried pop. Desolation Wilderness most recently have had a CD/LP on K Recs from Olympia. Adam from Kickball and members of LAKE share the stage with Nic Zwart and oozing, dripping reverb soaking their down tempo beach boys reminscent jams.

Nic did a fantastic job engineering the sounds of new LAKE and Desolation Wilderness records, with help from Bob Schwenkler of Bicycle Records and time at Dub Narcotic.

Devon Williams will be playing an alternate free set at Sonic Boom tomorow at 6PM, for you poor kids, otherwise I highly recomend coming to Vera for the entire bill.

Robert Wolfe has been hard at work since he moved back to Seattle from LA this winter. Little to my knowledge until recently, he has been hard at work on videos just around the corner. The Kid’s Cave freshest new act, Dimples, have been making kids blush at house parties around the Central District for the past few months. Sets containing forgotten lyrics, mistakes, and that How Bizarre cover put them in the running for most endearing band in 2008, for sure. Sara and Ian, who play guitar and drums respectively, share vocal duties take what they can from Beat Happening and drop it into the new millennium with all the pop power they can muscle.

These kids are adorable and will charm the pants off you, recommended songs are Knight Vibing and Top 10. Listen to Dimples here.

JOCK THERAPY LANDS

After months of tumultuous waiting and manufacturing problems our blood and sweat finally arrived in physical form on my front porch as Little Party and the Bad Business’ (LP & BBs) debut album, Jock Therapy. Over the years the two members have developed their sound from two keyboards and a hell of a lot of youthful energy culminating in their new release; full of energetic pop punk anthems and youthful tounge-in-cheek lyrics. Gang vocals and extra instrumentation on the record by members of The Last Slice of Butter and Talbot Tagora.

LP & BB have been playing shows in the Seattle area for half a decade, inciting singing and dancing mobs of kids in basements and all ages venues. Their loyalty to the Seattle’s east side shows in the regularity of appearances at places like Grrnd Zero (Bellevue) and the Old Redmond Firehouse where they originally met. They are supporters and participants of Seattle’s local, all ages scene, spilling their bountiful positivity wherever they play.

Drum Lessons by Drummer

Drummer, also known as Lisa, the drummer for Kickball and Explode Into Colors (her Portland band) is currently offering drum lessons to those in Portland, OR.

She has been teaching drums for over ten years and also teaches and band coaches at a rock and roll camp for girls.

From Drummer:

Lessons are an hour long, and you can take them weekly, bi-weekly, or even
just monthly. Each lesson is $30-40 sliding scale. I can teach in my
practice space or in your space on your kit. what we work on is totally
flexible, but i generally teach rudiments, fills, and all sorts of styles
of beats.

In rare cases i can do work-trade, such as if you are a highly skilled
bike mechanic or seamstress.

I posted a new LP&BB song from their new Record Jock Therapy coming out in June, at The Vera Project. The album also was finished up at The Vera Project thanks to the blood, sweat, and tears of seven canadian children and Jeff McNulty. The Vera is close to paying for their new space! They need to raise $33K by June 30th so the Murdoch Trust will match us with a grant! If you want to donate online go here, and if you want to know about The Vera Project go here.

We are all super stoked to announce that FRANCOIS VIROT's new album YES OR NO will be available from Highfives and Handshakes on cassette as a split release with Brown Interior and Houseopolis Records.

Francois will be on US tour starting next week, please go out and support him! The cassette will be available MAY 28th, 2008 at the Seattle, WA show and by mail order after that time. Pay Pal and a new website coming soon!

For Portlanders tonight, Bow+Arrow, Dirty Mittens, and Reporter (feat. members of Wet Confetti) will be playing at Valentines. I will try to make it.

I have 5 copies of the Pharmacy's new album, Choose Yr Own Adventure, on cassette left. The rest are available from the band on tour now!

June 20th, 2008 Little Party and the Bad Business will have their records release at the Vera Project, new album Jock Therapy will be out on Highfives and Handshakes!
